BCC and MCLA To Pilot College Program For Homeless Youths

PITTSFIELD, Mass. Berkshire Community College (BCC) and Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) are working together as part of a new statewide effort to help teens who are homeless – those classified as unaccompanied homeless youth – enroll in college and earn the degrees prove to help people move beyond levels of poverty. The statewide initiative, piloted at various public community colleges and four year institutions across the Commonwealth, is called the Moving to College program. The application deadline for the Moving to College Scholarship program is March 1, 2021. The application, as well as eligibility requirements, can be found at https://www.doe.mass.edu/sfs/

Taunton retail marijuana: LMCC pot shop on County Street to open soon

TAUNTON  Flavia Hungaro has come a long way, both in terms of miles and the process, towards opening one of the first retail marijuana shops in Taunton. She s now at the finish line, hoping to open LMCC  short for Local Motion Cannabis Company  as soon as March or April of this year.  Her story begins in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she was born and raised. Hungaro, 35, moved to the U.S. in 2003, originally settling in Michigan, as part of an exchange program. She planned to move back to Brazil, using her newly improved English skills to get a better job, but instead she began working at a resort and decided to stay.

Set to begin next fall, the Moving to College pilot is a continuation of another state effort, the Massachusetts Student Housing Security Pilot, launched in 2018. The difference between the programs is school officials will target homeless students who have just graduated high school, as opposed to those who ve been in college for several years.
