After listening to public opinion two weeks ago, the City of Abbotsford has decided to accept the proposal for a 130,000 square foot commercial shopping centre.
Despite opposition from UFV students and community members, Abbotsford City Council passed the motion last Monday to move forward with the new shopping centre. The outdoor sporting goods store Cabela’s will be the main focal point, with a large parking lot and other commercial spaces for other retailers.
The centre will be on the corner of the Trans-Canada Highway and McCallum Rd., within a 5-km radius of UFV. Because of the bylaw changing from 12 to 81 per cent commercial, some community members felt that the project would interfere with the livable character of the U-District and Official Community Plan (OCP). These initiatives promote public transportation, mixed-use business and residential properties, and a “livable” way of life. Some citizens felt that the new shopping centre didn

Bluegrass bands played well-received sets.
On September 12, the Canada Education Park campus in Chilliwack was the site of a 40th anniversary part for UFV. The event was bluegrass-themed and featured four live bands, which were primarily folk- and acoustic-oriented: Greenwood, Headwater, Viper Central, and the Paperboys. The first band that played, Greenwood, featured UFV’s geography professor Jonathan Hughes on mandolin.
UFV’s special events manager Betsy Terpsma explained how the idea for the event began.
“We had a committee made up of faculty and staff at UFV that we put together and were doing some work around what we wanted to do for the 40th anniversary. We decided that we wanted to have a couple of community parties and that we would do a community party in each [town with a UFV campus]: Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Mission, and Hope.”

This past Friday, the Student Union Society (SUS) held another scheduled board meeting at UFV’s Abbotsford campus.
Governance committee electoral policy motion tabled again
Changes to the electoral policy, proposed by VP internal Greg Stickland and the governance committee, were tabled by the board at their last meeting two weeks ago.
Stickland explained the governance committee has since worked to address the policy issues the board brought up.
“I received some feedback after last meeting, and even more between board meetings to the policy,” he explains. “All the things were accommodated for.”
However, during the board’s discussion, representative-at-large Jay Mitchell expressed concern regarding the policy’s by-election definition. Challenging the policy’s inability to fully address every possible by-election situation, Mitchell explained his worries to the board.
