Despite this convention, globally – and in New Zealand – 90% of wetlands have been destroyed, and remaining wetlands continue to be lost. However, there are some big potential gains on the horizon for wetlands with the introduction in 2020 of the government’s Essential Freshwater Package.

The Israel Nature and Parks Authority and the Environmental Protection Ministry marked World Wetlands Day on Tuesday by publishing a map of all water bodies in the country lakes, streams, swamps and seasonable winter ponds, as well as industrial and effluent ponds according to their ecological value. The map (labeled in Hebrew) is aimed at helping local authorities to work out how best to implement mosquito control so as not to harm the rich biodiversity found in some aquatic ecosystems.

Fifty years ago, nations gathered to create the world’s first global agreement to conserve a habitat. This had long been undervalued, and as a result was rapidly disappearing. Fifty years ago, there was a global call to action to save our wetlands. On February 2, 1971, the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance was adopted in Ramsar, Iran. Often referred to as the Ramsar Convention, its purpose was to stop the worldwide loss of wetlands. Today, 171 countries, including Canada, are parties to the convention. The Ramsar Convention has helped many wetlands. More than 2,400 wetlands around the world have been designated as Ramsar Wetlands of International Importance.
