More than 80 per cent of the construction of the Grand Ethiopia Renaissance Dam has now been completed, Ethiopia s Minister of Water and Irrigation Seleshi Bekele announced.
Bekele added that the dam s reservoir will be filled for the second time as planned during the upcoming rainy season and that we are ready to address Sudan s concerns about the filling and exchange information. We clearly demonstrated during the Kinshasa meeting Addis Ababa s position and desire to end these negotiations. We confirmed in Kinshasa our commitment to exchange information on the filling process, Bekele added.

The joint US and African efforts to resolve the Grand Ethiopia Renaissance Dam (GERD) crisis are racing against time, as Ethiopia insists on implementing the second filling next July, while Egypt and Sudan reject any partial solution.
US Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa Jeffrey Feltman concluded on Monday his tour to Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia where he met with the Ethiopian Minister of Water, Irrigation, and Energy Seleshi Bekele, in the presence of the Ethiopian GERD negotiating team.

According to MoFA the two discussed current affairs in Ethiopia, in the region and bilateral issues. Demeke emphasized Ethiopia’s firm commitment to continue the negotiations under AU framework and reach a mutually acceptable outcome to the three countries.

Three years ago, a wave of political change swept across the Horn of Africa. In Sudan and Ethiopia, popular protests led to a change in leadership and what many assumed were democratic transitions. Ethiopia and Eritrea ended their two-decades-long rivalry, for which Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The peoples of the Horn of Africa were euphoric for what many thought would be a new chapter in the region’s history.
