Timothy Koets: US man sentenced to prison in drowning of autistic son

A former western Michigan college professor has been sentenced to prison for manslaughter in the death of his autistic teenage son, who drowned after spending an hour in an icy backyard pool with his arms restrained. Timothy Koets, 51, was sentenced to a minimum of two years in prison and a maximum of 15 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter. He had pleaded guilty in December to involuntary manslaughter and child abuse in the March 2019 death of 16-year-old Samuel Koets. “Sam had value, and the sanction will not restore Sam, but it will recognise that all humans have value, and because of the neglect you committed, a valuable human has lost his life,” said Ottawa County Circuit Court Judge Jon Hulsing.

Grand Rapids Business Journal Courtesy Grand Rapids Community College Grand Rapids Community College and Ferris State University have formed a partnership to offer five seats to GRCC students in Ferris State University’s doctor of pharmacy program each year. “Partnerships make our community stronger, and Ferris has been a proud partner for GRCC for many years,” GRCC President Bill Pink said. “The new agreement creates more opportunities for GRCC students to study in one of the best pharmacy programs in the state and work toward a well-paying, in-demand career.” Students will take all their prerequisite classes for the program at GRCC, then transfer directly into the Ferris doctoral program. GRCC students who are accepted in Ferris’ annual cohort can apply for admission into one of the university’s two dual-degree programs and earn a Master of Business Administration or Master of Public Health with the Doctor of Pharmacy degree.

GRAND HAVEN — A Hudsonville-area father and former Grand Rapids Community College professor will serve time in a state prison for the 2019 drowning death of his teen son, who had autism.On Monday, Timothy Koets was sentenced to two to 15 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter and one year behind bars for fourth-degree child abuse. He received credit for two days served for each of the counts.His son, Sam Koets, 16, who had the cognitive ability of a 2-year-old, died in March 2019.
