Attorneys: DA should step aside from deputy shooting probe

(AP) Attorneys for the family of a Black man who was fatally shot by sheriff s deputies in North Carolina have asked the local prosecutor to recuse himself from the investigation because they say he s too close to the men who fired their weapons. Attorneys Ben Crump and Bakari Sellers said in statements Monday that District Attorney Andrew Womble s involvement would be a “miscarriage of justice” for Andrew Brown Jr., who was killed April 21 in Elizabeth City. “The involved officers have close relationships with District Attorney Andrew Womble, making him unfit to lead the investigation into Andrew’s killing,” Crump said in his statement.

The lawyers sent a letter to District Attorney Andrew Womble, whose district covers Pasquotank and nearby counties, asking for his recusal over his well-defined relationship with the sheriff s office, CNN reported. The letter, led by family attorney Bakari Sellers, asked Womble to immediately recuse yourself from the case.

More Delays, Restrictions In Release Of Footage Of Andrew Brown Jr s Death

Under this latest order, Brown’s family will also only be able to view less than 20 minutes out of the nearly two hours of body cam footage that authorities have.  “The portions of the videos withheld are found to not contain images of the deceased, and thus are not appropriate for disclosure at this time,” Judge On April 27, Foster ruled that Brown’s family would be able to view the footage “within 10 days,” but the new order, written on Thursday (May 6) said the 10-day period would start from when this latest ruling was given.
