66-Year-Old Man Charged in Murders of 3 Elderly Women in Same Building

An elderly woman was found dead in her home in Brooklyn with a phone cord around her neck, cops said Monday. The 78-year-old victim, identified as Juanita Caballero, was found by her son lying on the floor with the phone cord wrapped around her neck on Jan. 15. Juanita Caballero was living in Woodson Houses apartment on Powell Street near Dumont Avenue, according to authorities. Police said Juanita Caballero was already unconscious and unresponsive when authorities arrived. Thus, she was pronounced dead on the scene, according to a New York Post report. Police confirmed that her death was ruled a homicide by asphyxiation.

Kevin Gavin, 66, of Brooklyn, was taken into custody Thursday and charged with three counts of second degree murder. He allegedly admitted to the killings, and claimed his victims didn’t pay him for his services, the New York Post reported.

Kevin Gavin, 66, murdered three senior residents at the Carter G. Woodson Houses over the span of six years, with his most recent murder happening Jan. 15, police said during a press conference. “Mr. Gavin was familiar with many of the residents in the building and ran errands for some of the elderly tenants who resided at that location,” said NYPD Chief of Detectives Rodney Harrison. “NYPD detectives were able to link Gavin to the murders through witnesses and forensic evidence,” Harrison said.
