An elderly woman was found dead in her home in Brooklyn with a phone cord around her neck, cops said Monday. The 78-year-old victim, identified as Juanita Caballero, was found by her son lying on the floor with the phone cord wrapped around her neck on Jan. 15.
Juanita Caballero was living in Woodson Houses apartment on Powell Street near Dumont Avenue, according to authorities.
Police said Juanita Caballero was already unconscious and unresponsive when authorities arrived. Thus, she was pronounced dead on the scene, according to a New York Post report.
Police confirmed that her death was ruled a homicide by asphyxiation.

The New York City Police Department is facing harsh criticism following the capture of Brooklyn serial killer Kevin Gavin. The 66-year-old was arrested for the murders of three women at NYCHA’s Carter Woodson senior housing development in Brownsville.
The murders of Gavin’s victims spanned from 2015 to last week and took place in each of the victims’ apartments, ABC News reports.
Gavin was initially a suspect in the investigation into the homicide of the second victim. However, the NYPD didn’t connect him to all of the cases until the murder of the third victim on Jan. 15.

A handyman for a low-income housing complex for seniors in New York City has been arrested for the suspected serial killings of three elderly women. Authorities said the handyman lived in the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) building and took advantage of his friendship with these women before carrying out the brutal killings, which included stabbing, bludgeoning and strangulation by telephone cord.
Kevin Gavin, 66, of Brooklyn, was taken into custody Thursday and charged with three counts of second degree murder. He allegedly admitted to the killings, and claimed his victims didn’t pay him for his services, the New York Post reported.

A handyman who ran errands for elderly tenants in a Brooklyn housing project was arrested Wednesday for a string of murders, the New York Police Department (NYPD) announced Thursday.
Kevin Gavin, 66, murdered three senior residents at the Carter G. Woodson Houses over the span of six years, with his most recent murder happening Jan. 15, police said during a press conference.
“Mr. Gavin was familiar with many of the residents in the building and ran errands for some of the elderly tenants who resided at that location,” said NYPD Chief of Detectives Rodney Harrison.
“NYPD detectives were able to link Gavin to the murders through witnesses and forensic evidence,” Harrison said.
