Authorities in Massachusetts have identified a man fatally shot by police above a local candy store this week.
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said Tuesday that Michael Conlon, 28, of Newton, was killed after refusing to comply with orders to drop his knife Monday afternoon.
State and local police had been responding to a 911 call from the owner of “Indulge!” in Newton. Ryan said officers located Conlon, who lived above the shop, in a second floor hallway.
The officers followed him to the third floor and called for backup, including a mental health clinician, she said.

A fatal shooting outside a Woburn restaurant Saturday night remains under investigation, according to authorities
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Woburn Police Chief Robert F. Rufo confirmed a person was killed when gunfire erupted outside the Jake n Joe’s Sports Grille Restaurant located on Mishawum Road in Woburn around 9 p.m. Saturday.
Police officials told NBC10Boston that a shooter fired at least 20 rounds.
“The preliminary investigation suggests that this is not a random event and there is no threat to the public,” authorities said.
The investigation is ongoing. The district attorney’s office did not release any more information about the victim as of Sunday morning.
