Last year ended with 499 homicides bringing the rate up to 40% year-to-date making it the second highest tally in the United States behind Chicago. The last year that was as deadly was in 1990. As of Jan. 5th, the city s number of homicides is already up over 125% from this time last year.  Commissioner Outlaw noted that much of the symptoms of the violence of 2020 were present in the year before and will be present this year, but there are new solutions they re seeking to explore in order to address the violence.
