LANSING Lawmakers in the Michigan Senate have introduced a series of bills aimed at law enforcement reforms. The bills were introduced May 25 the anniversary of the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin.
In total, 12 bills were introduced in the Senate. The bills target training, enforcement and accountability standards for police departments in Michigan.
Senate Bill 473, introduced by Sen. Roger Victory, R-Hudsonville, would require the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards to develop guidelines for third-party investigations of officer-involved deaths and require each agency to develop a publicly available policy that meets those guidelines.
SB 474, introduced by Sen. Jeremy Moss, D-Southfield, to require Use of Force violations to be included in separation records maintained by MCOLES.
