BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) â The latest report from the U.S. Drought Monitor still shows Branch County is part of a large area of Michiganâs Lower Peninsula that is considered to be in a moderate drought.
The Michigan State University Extension Service weather station at the Bloom Dairy Farm recorded 35-hundreths of an inch of rain on Wednesday. That brought the rainfall total over the last ten days up to 1.47 inches.
The weather station recorded 1.78 inches of rain in May after only 1.55 inches fell in April.
Thereâs not much change this week in southwest Michiganâs moisture situation. USDA reports 62 percent of the state is short to very short in topsoil moisture.

BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) â The past month did not bring April showers to Branch County.
As April comes to a close, the Michigan State University Extension Service weather station at the Bloom Dairy Farm recorded just over one-and-a-half inches of rain for the month.
It measured just under two inches of rain for all of March.
The weather has dry throughout Michigan recently, apart from some rain showers this week. But there has not been enough precipitation to ease dry conditions across the state.
According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, nearly all of the Lower Peninsula is currently in a Moderate Drought. It comes after a winter season that was drier than normal and those dry conditions have continued for much of the spring season so far.

BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – Branch County along with other Michigan counties that border Indiana and Ohio remain in a moderate drought according to the latest report released Thursday by the U.S. Drought Monitor.
Over 17 percent of Michigan is considered to have moderate drought conditions. Included in that designation are Hillsdale and St. Joseph Counties along with most of Calhoun County.
During moderate drought conditions, most crops and vegetation along with farmed Christmas trees are stressed and well levels decline.
The Michigan State University Extension Service weather station at the Bloom Dairy Farm measured 0.23 of an inch of rain on Thursday for the first rainfall measurement of April.
