Dec 19, 2020 To Chris and Merrie Corbett, owners of the Blue Pelican Inn Restaurant in Central Lake, who on Sunday gave away more than 650 meals. This is the fourth year the couple offered free food. The meal included ham, turkey, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, stuffing, and pumpkin and apple pie. Restaurant front-end manager Trisha Marr said employees volunteered their time and started cooking at 6:30 a.m. Meals were served curbside. To Craig Bauer and Ray Fisher, among the 22 people in Michigan named 2020 Assistant Football Coaches of the Year by the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association. It is the first time is quite awhile that two area coaches won the honor the same season. Fisher works in Kingsley, Bauer at Traverse City St. Francis. Other recent winners from the area include Stan Pasch (Suttons Bay) in 2019, Kevin Kent (Lake City) in 2018 and Kurt Gillespie (McBain) in 2017.

Michigan State offers program for beginning farmers

The pandemic-adapted Organic Farmer Training Program will return in 2021. Katie Brandt | Dec 18, 2020 After a year hiatus in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Michigan State University Organic Farmer Training Program is returning in 2021 to offer safe beginning farmer training. A signature program of the MSU Student Organic Farm, the 2021 MSU OFTP will be a 50-50 mix of field and online learning, including 11 hands-on days (starting March 15) at the MSU Student Organic Farm, six field trip days to 15-plus production and educational farms, and 16 interactive online class days .  Check out the full schedule to see the plan for safe in-person learning and interactive online activities. The goal of OFTP is to create a learning community of aspiring and beginning farmers, farmworkers, homesteaders, educational gardeners and OFTP instructors to support each other in learning farm and business planning skills.

MSU Farm Business Incubator Program accepting applications from beginning farmers | News, Sports, Jobs

The Michigan State University Upper Peninsula Research and Extension Center CHATHAM The Michigan State University Upper Peninsula Research and Extension Center (UPREC) in Chatham, MI is accepting applications for its 2021 Farm Business Incubator (FBI) program. The FBI is a launching point for beginning farmers interested in starting their own business. This program lowers barriers to entry for beginning farmers by providing access to organically managed land, hoop house space, farm equipment, tools, cold storage, and wash/pack facilities in exchange for a small program fee and four hours of volunteer work each week to support the overall program. Affordable on-site housing is also available. UPREC staff and MSU Extension educators provide mentorship on business planning, marketing avenues, and farm management.
