Bronson Healthcare opens cancer center - Grand Rapids Business Journal

Grand Rapids Business Journal Courtesy Bronson Healthcare Bronson Cancer Center in downtown Kalamazoo opened its doors and is now providing outpatient treatment for adult patients from across the region. The five-story, 85,000-square-foot facility with offices and clinical areas for medical oncology, hematology and infusion services took just under two years to build. Planning began in 2018 after it was determined these services, previously located at the West Michigan Cancer Center (WMCC), would transition back to the hospital’s campus in 2021. As a result, each patient is now able to have their cancer care coordinated within the Bronson Healthcare system along with other medical services they receive there. This enhances communication between providers and patients and allows all visits to be documented in one central electronic health record to ensure the best possible care for each patient.

Two large studies, published Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2021, by the New England Journal of Medicine, give a much sharper picture of which inherited mutations raise the risk of breast cancer for women without a family history of the disease, and how common these flawed genes are in the general population. Doctors say the results can help women make better decisions about screening, preventive surgery or other steps. (Kimberly P. Mitchell/Detroit Free Press via AP, File) January 20, 2021 - 2:03 PM

Two studies shed light on mutations breast cancer risk

The American Cancer Society estimates that 276,000 new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in the United States last year. The new work suggests that at least 13,800 of them occur in women with inherited gene mutations that raise their risk of developing the disease. Until now, what’s been known about inherited risk largely has come from studies of women with a family history of breast cancer or unusual situations such as getting it at a very young age. There also has been little work on specific mutations in these genes and how much each affects the odds of developing disease. The new studies fill some of those gaps.
