California coalition aims to make hydrogen power cost-competitive by 2028

Dive Brief: HyDeal Los Angeles, a green hydrogen initiative launched in Los Angeles on Monday, aims to bring the cost of hydrogen fuel to $1.50/kg by 2028. At that price, electricity from hydrogen-fired turbines would run about $35/MWh, estimates the Green Hydrogen Coalition, which launched the cooperative initiative. In the project s first phase, set to take place over the next three months, the partners plan to identify potential industrial-scale applications for green hydrogen in the LA Basin and develop an infrastructure plan to connect them to hydrogen production and storage. Mitsubishi Power & Texas Brine partner on large-scale salt cavern storage for hydrogen to support decarbonization efforts in the eastern US Mitsubishi Power Americas and Texas Brine Company are collaborating to develop large-scale long-duration hydrogen storage solutions to support decarbonization efforts across the eastern United States. Long-duration hydrogen storage is a key enabling technology for the transition to a net zero carbon energy future. This collaboration expands Mitsubishi Power’s capability to store hydrogen safely and cost effectively in salt caverns in strategic locations across North America. The nation’s largest brine producer, Texas Brine, and its affiliates have salt positions in New York, Virginia, Texas and Louisiana that will enable access to major load centers in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and the Gulf Coast.

A massive “green hydrogen hub” adjacent to a coal power plant in Utah could get over half a billion dollars in US government loans to support its development. Targeting the use of renewable energy-generated hydrogen as very long-duration or seasonal energy storage, the Advanced Clean Energy Storage Project would pair more than 1,000MW of hydrogen electrolysers with giant salt caverns that could each store more than 150GWh of dispatchable energy capacity meaning that in excess of 150 hours of storage could be possible. Project co-development partners Mitsubishi Power Americas and Magnum Development said yesterday that the project has been invited to apply for up to US$595 million in loans from the US Department of Energy’s Loans Program Office.
