Months after reducing bus passenger seating to one-fourth of normal capacity, Metro Transit is lifting its pandemic-era capacity requirements as of Friday.
Officials said spreading out along buses and light rail seats will still be encouraged, and masks will be still be required as a result of a federal mandate for public transit systems nationwide.
The move toward opening up bus and light trains to normal capacity is spurred by rising COVID vaccination numbers and falling numbers of hospitalizations and deaths, as well as the recent decision by Gov. Tim Walz to lift nearly all of the state’s pandemic restrictions by Memorial Day. A statewide mask mandate ends on or before July 1.
