Chauvin trial: Expert says George Floyd died from a low level of oxygen caused by cuffs, position By: Scripps National and last updated 2021-04-08 18:29:11-04 MINNEAPOLIS — A key prosecution witness told jurors Thursday that George Floyd died due to a lack of oxygen from being pinned with a knee of his neck, and refuting the defense s claim that health concerns and pre-existing conditions contributed to Floyd s death. Dr. Martin Tobin, a lung and critical care specialist at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital and Loyola University’s medical school in Illinois, testified that because his breathing was severely constricted while Chauvin and two other Minneapolis officers held Floyd down, that due to a lack of oxygen, he suffered brain damage which then caused his heart to stop.

Forensic Scientist Found George Floyd s Blood, Pills With His DNA In Squad Car

By: CBS News A forensic scientist testified in the trial of Derek Chauvin Wednesday that she found George Floyd s blood and pills with Floyd s DNA in the squad car where Floyd struggled with officers. Chauvin, who was seen in disturbing videos kneeling on Floyd s neck for more than nine minutes, is charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. McKenzie Anderson, a crime scene team leader with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, testified that she photographed but didn t collect the pills when she first processed the squad car in May 2020. She also found two pills in the car Floyd was driving when she processed it at the same time. She said she re-processed the squad car at the request of the defense team in January 2021 and collected and tested the pills found in the back seat, confirming they contained Floyd s saliva.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) The defense attorney for the former Minneapolis police officer on trial in the death of George Floyd tried Wednesday to show that Floyd yelled “I ate too many drugs” as three officers pinned him to the ground. Attorney Eric Nelson didn’t get the clear confirmation he was seeking, but he may have planted a seed in jurors’ minds anyway as he seeks to sow reasonable doubt about the prosecution’s case against Derek Chauvin.

The Chauvin Trial So Far

The Chauvin Trial So Far Here in Minnesota and around the country, all eyes are on the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin for the alleged murder of George Floyd. We are nearing the end of the prosecution’s case, so this is perhaps an opportune moment to assess what has happened so far. While not listening to every moment of the testimony, I have followed the trial closely. Much could be said, but here are a few big-picture observations: The defense got off to a slow start. Eric Nelson, Chauvin’s only in-court lawyer, was rather passive during jury selection and, I thought, delivered a sub-par opening statement. But he has gained steam during cross-examination of the state’s witnesses, which he has done skillfully. And the jury has seen him as one fallible man standing against the immense power of the state. This might create sympathy in unexpected quarters.

Yesterday, he began his testimony by saying he thought Mr. Chauvin had used excessive force on George Floyd.
