Saturday s COVID update from the Minnesota Department of Health includes 37 new deaths and more than 1,400 new cases.
The newly reported deaths bring the state s total to 5,887 over the course of the pandemic, of which (63.8%) (3,756) were residents of long-term care, including 22 of the 37 reported Saturday.
Minnesota last Saturday confirmed the first five cases of the U.K.-based mutant variant of COVID-19, with residents in four Twin Cities counties testing positive for the B.1.1.7. variant after falling ill between Dec. 16-31.
COVID-19: Moderna vaccine set to arrive in MN Wednesday, will head to long-term care
The first priority group is expected to be vaccinated by the end of January.

Minnesota is set to receive its first supply of the COVID-19 vaccine manufactured by Moderna, in addition to the doses that have already arrived from Pfizer/BioNTech.
Moderna became the second pharma company to receive FDA approval for the COVID-19 vaccine, and the first set of doses will arrive in Minnesota on Wednesday.
The Minnesota Department of Health s director of infectious disease Kris Ehresmann said Minnesota is expecting 94,800 doses of the vaccine this week.

Minnesota was expecting to receive enough vaccine doses from Pfizer and Moderna to vaccinate 183,000 people by the end of December, but that level of vaccination may not be possible because the federal government has apparently shorted Minnesota what it was promised.
Speaking Friday morning on WCCO Radio, Gov. Tim Walz said he s hoping the smaller shipment is a temporary issue that gets resolved quickly. We too were shorted what we were told on this, said Walz, who a week ago informed Minnesotans that by the end of December the state would receive 136,600 doses of the Pfizer vaccine and 46,800 doses of the Moderna vaccine.
