Town of Surfside hires structural engineer to study condo collapse

Allyn Kilsheimer, the structural engineer hired by the town of Surfside, Florida, to study Thursday’s condo collapse, said he has already begun examining the building and will use a meticulous, computer-assisted process of elimination to attempt to identify the causes of the disaster.
He explained his process.
“Generally speaking, you visit the site, you try to look at drawings to the extent they are available, you listen to all the clatter that happens when these things happen, and just keep that in the back of your head,” said Kilsheimer, the president of KCE Structural Engineers. “And then what I do is I come up with in my head a listing, based on my experience, of here are all the things that I think could cause this kind of a problem, and then you begin assessing all that information… and you eliminate those possibilities one at a time… and then as you’re doing this

Rescuers are on their fifth day of clearing rubble and debris in search of survivors after the building, near Miami, collapsed unexpectedly in the early hours of Thursday morning.
The recovery of another body on Monday brings the death toll to 11, while another 150 are still missing after the collapse.

Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett described an interaction he had with a child awaiting news on one of her parents who were inside Champlain Towers South at the time of the collapse.
The mayor said Monday he had seen the 11- or 12-year-old girl at the disaster site before and came across her again Sunday night after families were allowed onto the wreckage. She was reading a Jewish prayer to herself, sitting at the site by where one of her parents presumably is. And that really brought it home to me. She wasn t crying. She was just lost, he said.
