SURFSIDE, Florida (AFP) The death toll climbed to 28 Monday in the collapse of a Florida condo tower, where search work resumed after the dangerously unstable remaining portion of the building was brought down with explosives ahead of a coming tropical storm, officials said.
Some 117 people remained missing after the 12-story Champlain Towers South crumbled over a week ago in Surfside, but an Israeli search official put the chances of finding survivors at “close to zero.”

11 hours ago Search and rescue teams have recovered four additional bodies in the pile of rubble from a collapsed building in Surfside, Florida , following the demolition of the remaining building , according to officials. First responders were able to search in areas previously inaccessible due to the instability of the portion of Champlain Towers South that still stood following the partial collapse on June 24, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava told reporters at a press conference Monday morning. Three bodies were recovered in the morning and an additional body was found in the afternoon, according to officials.
On Sunday, Phillips filed a motion to stop the impending demolition, arguing that pet owners who were willing to assume the risk should be allowed to go inside and find their pets. The judge rejected it in part because of assurances that every measure had been taken to search for missing animals.
“The Miami-Dade Fire Rescue team conducted multiple full sweeps of the building, in person, including searching in closets and under beds and other hiding places,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Danielle Levine-Cava today at a news conference, reiterating what she’s been saying for days.
“They had tried on their own to get back in the building, were told no, we didn’t want to get their hopes up but if it had succeeded it would’ve been a wonderful thing,” Phillips said. “When it fails, it rubs salt in an already very raw wound.”
