COVID-19 vaccines available at Misquamicut Beach Saturday
PROVIDENCE – In an effort to assist the state with its goal of vaccinating more Rhode Islanders against COVID-19, the Department of Environmental Management has partnered with the Rhode Island Department of Health to host a free vaccination clinic at Misquamicut State Beach in Westerly this weekend.
DEM will host a vaccination clinic on Saturday, June 12, from 11 a.m. to noon for beach employees and visitors. The clinic is open to residents and non-residents, and will take place in the parking lot at Misquamicut State Beach. Parking charges will be in effect for those who come to the beach for the vaccination clinic.
With many COVID-19 restrictions being lifted at beaches in the region, a busy summer season is expected.
Local beach operators and officials are gearing up to welcome more visitors this summer and reopen some amenities, from amusement rides to concession stands. While many beaches are easing residency restrictions and stricter capacity limits put in place last summer, some restrictions remain in place and vary by beach.
Pre-season pass sales at Ocean Beach Park in New London have been brisk. People are anxious, park manager Dave Sugrue said.
City of Groton Mayor Keith Hedrick said he s looking forward to a return to normal at Eastern Point Beach.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)- The Department of Environmental Management announced on Wednesday that two of the state’s beaches would be opening this weekend, two weeks early.
Scarborough North and Roger Wheeler state beaches will be open both Saturday and Sunday this weekend weather permitting.
The weekend trend will continue up until Memorial Day to accommodate early beachgoers.
“After the year we’ve all had, we’re glad to open two popular state beaches early so that Rhode Islanders can get outside and enjoy themselves when crowds are light,” said DEM Director Janet Coit.
Beaches will official be opening full time on May 29.
