Construction of Miwongoni River Dam in Machakos, Kenya to resume
Construction of Miwongoni River Dam in Machakos, Kenya to resume
Modified date:
Construction of US $3m Miwongoni River Dam in Machakos County, Kenya is set to resume. This is after the Environment and Lands Court set aside an order that stopped the project in July last year.
According to Justice Oscar Angote the injunctive order issued against the Athi Water Services Board was made out of misrepresentation of facts by a group of more than 200 residents affected by the project.
The Athi Water Services Board appointed Jiangxi Water and Hydropower Construction Company Limited to undertake the project and the contractor went on site to begin work. However, the area residents claimed interest in the land as Project Affected Persons who have homes and permanent amenities on the land and, as such, demanded compensation.

Segun Awofadeji in Gombe
Gombe State has approved over N3.2 billion contract for the installation of solar street lights within the state’s metropolis and its environs.
THISDAY gathered that Phase 1 of the project is to cover 71 kilometres of roads across the state capital.
Briefing newsmen on the outcome of the 11th SEC meeting held yesterday at Gombe, the State Commissioner of Information, Hon. Ibrahim Alhassan Kwami said the decision by the state government to change to the solar system as against the current generator powered streetlights was because of the ingenuity of Inuwa Yahaya-led administration in cutting cost, especially in the face of global economic meltdown occasioned by the covid-19 pandemic and other realities.
Just a day before the government announced it would finalise compensation payments to relocated families in order to make way for the construction of the Nandoni Dam more than two decades ago community leader Gilbert Netshivhambe received devastating news.
Another claimant who had waited since 1998 to be compensated for the loss of land had died on Sunday 7 January.
A total of 1,401 households made way for the construction of the Nandnoni Dam, but only a few of them have access to a regular water supply since the process was initiated in 1998. (Photo: Lucas Ledwaba / Mukurukuru Media)
“
Aaaaiii! Plenty of the beneficiaries have died, plenty, plenty…” said Netshivhambe on Tuesday afternoon in reaction to the passing of RT Mavhungu, who was born in 1941.
