Vanguard News Gov Emmanuel attracts $1.4b fertilizer plant to Akwa Ibom On … AS FG, OCB reach agreement in Morocco The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel has signed an agreement for the citing of a multi billion fertilizer plant in his State. Governor Emmanuel was part of a Nigerian delegation led by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, that visited Morocco to set out the next steps of the $1.4 Bln fertilizer production plant project launched in June 2018. The agreement between the OCP Africa, the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority and the Akwa Ibom State Government will birth one of the biggest investments in the fertilizer production industry worldwide.

Date Time Further action on cadmium needed for global food safety An international group of leading fertiliser and soils experts have published a major review of the status of the toxic heavy metal cadmium in agricultural systems around the world. They say that as well as good agricultural management practices to minimise uptake into the world’s food chains, further action and research is needed to achieve ‘zero-net accumulation’ of cadmium in soils over the long term, in order to not compromise food quality. Led by University of Adelaide’s Professor Mike McLaughlin with scientists also from Belgium, China and Canada, the group reports that in some countries human cadmium intakes are increasing due largely to soil changes such as acidification and salinisation.

On 15 January 2021, the Solar and New Energies Research Institute (IRESEN) launched the construction of a research centre in Benguerir to develop technological solutions adapted to the local and African context. The project is financed by the Korean International Cooperation Agency (Koïca) to the tune of 8 million dollars. A research centre on renewable energies will soon be set up in Morocco. The Research Institute for Solar and New Energies (IRESEN) has recently launched the construction works of this centre in Benguerir, in the centre of the Cherifian kingdom. IRESEN is implementing this project in partnership with the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P).
