EU-IOM Joint Initiative Celebrates its Fourth Anniversary: A Lifeline to Vulnerable and Stranded Migrants amid COVID-19
Brussels - In late August 2020, 118 Ghanaian migrants stranded in Libya due to COVID-19 restrictions were able to go back home. The flight was the first under the International Organization for Migration s Voluntary Humanitarian Return (VHR) programme since the outbreak of the pandemic.
Several VHR flights to different countries in Africa have since followed, providing a lifeline to migrants who were unable to leave conflict-torn Libya by themselves due to COVID-19 related travel and movement restrictions.
They were made possible through the EU-IOM Joint Initiative for Migrant Protection and Reintegration, which marks its fourth anniversary this month. The programme was launched in December 2016, under the EU Emergency Trust Fund for Africa agreed in the Valetta Summit in response to the urge

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has donated Awareness Raising Equipment to the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) to enhance education on safe migration in the country.
Items received included professional microphone system, audio mixer, loudspeaker, projection screen, generator, handheld power megaphone, photo-copy machine, torchlight and Sony sound recorder among others.
The donation was funded by the European Union (EU) Emergency Trust Fund for Africa through the EU-IOM Joint Initiative for Migrant Protection and Reintegration.

Dakar – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is appealing for EUR 100 million to continue providing urgent protection and critical assistance to vulnerable migrants from West and Central Africa along the Central and Western Mediterranean routes, as funding from the EU-IOM Joint Initiative for Migrant Protection and Reintegration comes to an end.
The imminent end of this life-saving programme, and the funding shortfall, raise deep concerns about the fates of tens of thousands of vulnerable men, women and children, states IOM Director General António Vitorino.
