(Lynn Moore | MLive) Facebook Share MUSKEGON, MI – Though Lake Michigan water levels have dropped, parking threatened by erosion at Pere Marquette beach’s far south end will remain closed off perhaps for several years. Severe erosion has caused a hazardous steep drop-off in front of the parking spots that the city of Muskegon blocked off about a year ago.

The only access to the beach will be via Sherman Boulevard and Beach Street starting Monday, April 19, said Muskegon Public Works Director Leo Evans. The 22-foot steel-and-glass sculpture must be assembled on site, Evans said. Traffic approaching Pere Marquette on Lakeshore Drive will be detoured on Lincoln Street to Sherman, he said.

But the two Muskegon drownings included in the data were not swimmers. In February, a Muskegon area man slipped on ice and fell into the lake, another was swept off the pier in November. Both men drowned.
