Taiwan shares end down on large cap tech stock losses 03/17/2021 05:26 PM CNA file photo Taipei, March 17 (CNA) Shares in Taiwan moved lower Wednesday as tech heavyweights, in particular in the semiconductor sector, came under downward pressure, led by contract chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), dealers said. Concerns over the market s future movement have been on the rise as market sentiment has been hurt in the wake of a large number of short-position futures contracts held by foreign institutional investors, indicating more selling in the spot market, the dealers said. The Taiex, the weighted index on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE), ended down 97.34 points, or 0.6 percent, at 16,215.82, after moving between 16,166.35 and 16,349.21. Turnover totaled NT$311.2 billion (US$10.99 billion).

Taiwan shares end lower after wild swing 03/08/2021 05:37 PM CNA file photo Taipei, March 8 (CNA) Shares in Taiwan closed lower Monday after a wild session, with the main board giving up more than 200 points in gains amid concerns over a possible uptrend in U.S. treasury yields, dealers said. Selling focused on the tech sector, in particular large cap semiconductor stocks, the recent strong showing of which led investors to lock in profits, while old economy and financial stocks remained largely resilient, lending support to the broader market, they said. The Taiex, the weighted index on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE), ended down 35.12 points, or 0.22 percent, at 15,820.11, after moving between 15,816.50, and 16,074.97. Turnover stood at NT$281.31 billion (US$10.03 billion), compared with NT$309.55 billion a session earlier.

Taiwan stocks tumble following tech share rout in U S market | Taiwan News

(CNA photo) Shares in Taiwan plunged 1.88 percent to close below 16,000 points on Thursday following an overnight dive in the tech-heavy Nasdaq index and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index in the United States. The Taiwan Stock Exchange Weighted Index (TAIEX) fell 305.32 points, breaching the 16,000 barrier to close at 15,906.41, below the monthly moving average of 15,951. Turnover totaled NT$327.68 billion (US$11.77 billion) during the trading session. Contract chipmakers Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) and United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) led the main board, moving lower throughout the session after their American depositary receipts (ADRs) dropped 2.47 percent and 3.72 percent, respectively, in the U.S. overnight. TSMC, the most heavily weighted stock on the local market, fell 3.38 percent to close at NT$601.00, while UMC dropped 5.49 percent to end at NT$49.05.
