Lobby seeks options for addicts

Article content A local grassroots committee aimed at helping those struggling with addictions continues to gain momentum about six months after it was launched. Citizens Helping Addicts and Alcoholics Get Treatment – known as CHAAT – has advocated for more treatment options in our region since it was founded in late 2020. With an active Facebook following and thousands of views on each video it posts, the group has prompted many discussions among community members. CHAAT has not focused solely on community awareness via social media. It has also made significant contact with local political representatives. “CHAAT has invited all members of all political parties and community councillors in the Algoma District to become involved in any way,” Robert Peace, a spokesperson for CHAAT, told Sault This Week. “We made presentations as a group to Mr. Romano and a detailed presentation to city council earlier this year. All were well received.”

Public Utilities Commission (PUC), the municipally owned utilities distributor, announced in a May 4 news release that it had received the final go-ahead from the Ontario Energy Board (OEB). Approved by council in 2018, the $34-million initiative will modernize the city’s electricity system, improving its efficiency, reducing power outages, and cutting down on the length of power interruptions. It’s also expected to be more eco-friendly, decreasing carbon dioxide emissions by 2,804 tonnes annually, the equivalent of 600 passenger cars or 420 homes.
