After a spring of gradual, steady improvement, Northeast Florida is seeing a renewed surge in COVID-19 cases to emerge as the state s latest hot spot in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
Florida has now returned to double digits 11.5 percent in COVID-19 positivity during the last week, as of Friday s weekly report from the Florida Department of Health, with much of the increase concentrated in and around the Jacksonville area.
Among Florida s major metropolitan counties, Duval County now stands worst in several key metrics, including positivity rate, vaccination percentage, and infections per 100,000 residents.
Provisional state statistics released Thursday but not yet formally verified by the Florida Department of Health, and obtained after legal action from Gannett show 188 listed instances of the Delta variant in Duval County alone as of Thursday. Almost all of those cases are documented within the past six weeks.
