As Jordan Hersh watched on TV as supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol building Jan. 6, he had a thought unique to most American rabbis: It might be time to head to his second job.
Hersh is a chaplain in the Maryland Army National Guard, the only rabbi in the state’s military clergy ranks.
By that evening, Hersh was in uniform and at the Capitol. The next morning, he sent a note to his congregants at Beth Sholom Congregation, the Conservative synagogue in Frederick, Maryland, he has led since 2014.

When Rabbi Jordan Hersh’s grandfather, Joseph Goldstein, lived in Poland, thugs there picked Easter to beat up Jews. Our own fellow citizens chose the day for the presidential election certification to rampage our Capitol and beat up Capitol police and anyone else who got in their way.
“My grandfather came to this country and fought in World War II,” Hersh told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. “He always said that this country, which literally saved his life and the life of this family, was a refuge. And the Army in particular was part of that.”

MARYLAND â Maryland National Guard Mobile Vaccination Support Teams (MVST) are supporting COVID-19 vaccination efforts around the state.
At Governor Larry Hoganâs direction, the MDNG created the MVSTs to assist state and local health officials in administering vaccinations against the coronavirus in accordance with the stateâs COVID-19 vaccination plan.
âThis is just another great example of the responsiveness and agility of our National Guard,â said Governor Hogan. âWhether it was the massive response when the pandemic first hit last spring or the incredibly rapid deployment to the Capitol just recently, theyâve never failed to come through in a crisis.â
