Hersh is a chaplain in the Maryland Army National Guard, the only rabbi in the state’s military clergy ranks. By that evening, Hersh was in uniform and at the Capitol. The next morning, he sent a note to his congregants at Beth Sholom Congregation, the Conservative synagogue in Frederick, Maryland, he has led since 2014.

Our own fellow citizens chose the day for the presidential election certification to rampage our Capitol and beat up Capitol police and anyone else who got in their way.  “My grandfather came to this country and fought in World War II,” Hersh told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. “He always said that this country, which literally saved his life and the life of this family, was a refuge. And the Army in particular was part of that.”

At Governor Larry Hogan’s direction, the MDNG created the MVSTs to assist state and local health officials in administering vaccinations against the coronavirus in accordance with the state’s COVID-19 vaccination plan. “This is just another great example of the responsiveness and agility of our National Guard,” said Governor Hogan. “Whether it was the massive response when the pandemic first hit last spring or the incredibly rapid deployment to the Capitol just recently, they’ve never failed to come through in a crisis.”
