RUTHERFORD OUT, SCHULZ IN GOP RACE FOR GOVERNOR: Maryland Lt. Gov. Boyd Rutherford (R) has decided not to seek the state’s top job in 2022, creating a wide-open GOP primary. Hogan, who is term-limited, is set to leave office in 2023. Hours after Rutherford’s announcement, Hogan Commerce secretary Kelly Schulz released a campaign video saying she would seek the Republican nomination. Schulz, 52, served as labor secretary when Hogan took office in 2015, after a term representing Frederick County in the House of Delegates. Erin Cox in the Post.
Legislators aim for better voter accessibility in Maryland

One of the more notable bills would change the state’s entire voting system.
SB0271/HB0423, sponsored by Sen. Clarence Lam, D-Baltimore County and Howard, and Del. Jessica Feldmark, D-Baltimore County and Howard, respectively, would require that all Maryland voters use a uniformly accessible device to cast their votes.
During the bill’s hearing in the Senate Education, Health, and Environmental Affairs Committee on Feb. 18, Lam testified that the separate voting methods provided for disabled and non-disabled citizens in the current system have created anonymity issues for individuals in the disabled community.
The crux of the problem is that the enforcement entities the bill empowers have already been captured by the entities they are supposed to hold accountable, and the bill only makes that problem worse.
