The school-based health centers will initially offer school nursing, behavioral health services, preventive care and health education programming. Future plans for these centers include specific primary care services, key to improving health outcomes for students who face barriers to accessing health care.
“Lack of consistent health care and accessible mental health services can create barriers to regular school attendance,” said Dr. Scott Smith, Superintendent of St. Mary’s County Public Schools. “School Based Health Centers and our proactive partnership with the St. Mary’s County Health Department can address this need.”

The St. Mary’s County Health Department (SMCHD) has opened COVID-19 vaccination registration for St. Mary’s County residents aged 75 years or older in preparation for phase 1B of local COVID vaccination efforts.
The Department of Aging & Human Services in cooperation with SMCHD is available to provide registration assistance for seniors or their caregivers.

The St. Mary’s County Health Department (SMCHD) is beginning COVID-19 vaccination of first responders and community health care providers this week.
During the week of December 28th, SMCHD will coordinate with local partners to provide COVID-19 vaccine through mass vaccination clinics for first responders, including EMS, law enforcement, and fire rescue, as well as key community health personnel in urgent care and primary care settings.
These groups are part of phase 1A of the statewide COVID-19 vaccination plan. Mass vaccination events will continue in the following weeks as vaccine supply becomes available.
SMCHD is encouraging local outpatient health care provider practices to submit their practice information online via
