ST. MARY PARISH - Police arrested a Breaux Bridge man in the death of an infant Sunday afternoon.
Ervin Melancon, 53, is charged with second-degree murder. Melancon was found by the Broussard Police Department and transferred to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center. No bail has been set.
Police began investigating the incident around 2:30 p.m. Saturday following reports of a suspicious car. Deputies found the infant s body inside an abandoned car near the Intracoastal Bridge on Highway 317.
Detectives identified Melancon as a suspect in the case. The cause of the infant s death is still unknown.

ORIGINAL STORY: The St. Mary Parish Sheriff s Office received a call on Saturday, May 8 at approximately 2:30 pm of a suspicious car.
Deputies were dispatched to the vehicle that was located near the Intracoastal Bridge on Highway 317.
Upon arrival, they found a deceased infant s body inside the vehicle. The Sheriff s Office notified detectives and an investigation has been opened.
Around midnight, Sheriff Blaise Smith announced that a warrant has been issued for the suspect.
Ervin Melancon, 53, of Breaux Bridge, is wanted on the charge of Second-Degree Murder.

A Breaux Bridge man is facing charges after an infant was found dead in a car, according to the St. Mary Parish Sheriff s Office.
Deputies responded to a call about a suspicious car at about 2:30 p.m. near the Intracoastal Bridge on Highway 317, according to a release from the department.
Deputies found an infant, who was dead, inside the car, sheriff s office spokesperson David Spencer said.
Ervin Melancon, 53, was arrested Sunday night and charged with second-degree murder in connection with the child s death. He was booked into the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center where he is being held on a $2 million bond.

ST. MARY PARISH, La. (WAFB) - A man suspected in the death of a baby, whose body was found in a car, has been arrested.
The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office reported Ervin Melancon, 53, of Breaux Bridge, is charged with second-degree murder. The baby’s name has not been released and the cause of death has not been determined.
Sheriff Blaise Smith said Melancon was arrested Sunday, May 9, by the Broussard Police Department and was later transferred to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center. His bail is set at $2 million.

KATC has reached out to the St. Mary Parish Coroner s Office about the cause of the infantâs death, but both have declined to provide further information on the victim citing the ongoing investigation.
