BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Officials with the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections (DOC) say they are investigating the death of an inmate at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola.
Authorities with DOC and the West Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office say they have launched a joint investigation into the matter.
Investigators say the deceased inmate, who they did not identify, was involved in a fight with another inmate in his cell around 11:45 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16.

Angola Inmate Dies After Fight in Prison Cell
According to the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections, while correctional officers were making routine rounds they discovered the fight, and the injured inmate was taken to the hospital.
The injured inmate would pass away in the hospital and the other inmate involved in the fight is in investigative segregation at this time, according to the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections.
The fight occurred on Saturday night (1/16) around 11:45 pm.
The Louisiana Department of Corrections and West Feliciana Parish Sheriff s Office are currently investigating the case. Criminal charges are possible.
A cadet at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola has been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle contraband into the facility, state officials said.
