READY! kits with books, activities offered to incoming HCPS kindergartners Community volunteers put together 1,100 READY! kits full of kindergarten readiness activities Friday. Henderson County Public Schools and local early education partners are wanting to provide the kits to give incoming kindergartners tools they can use at home to prepare for their first year of school, according to a HCPS news release. The kits include books, crayons, clay, safety scissors, Unifix cubes and activity sheets. They will be distributed by each elementary school by the end of this school year. HCPS also developed a three-part series of “Kindergarteners Can!” videos to provide an introduction to what school will look like. The videos are available on the district’s YouTube channel, website, Facebook and Twitter.

Buncombe Helps Fund Monument Removal (Buncombe County, NC) Buncombe County is putting in its fair share to help remove an Asheville Confederate monument. Commissioners agreed yesterday to pay 35-thousand-dollars to find a consultant, who will be hired to repurpose the site at Vance Monument. The memorial is being demolished. The city of Asheville will also be putting in 35-thousand-dollars as well.

Toys for Tots, WCCA team up to help Santa in Henderson, surrounding counties More than 170 boys and girls enrolled in WCCA’s early childhood education programs will wake up Christmas morning to find presents under their tree thanks to a longtime partnership between Toys for Tots and Western Carolina Community Action, along with the support of thousands of elves across the region. Toys for Tots has partnered with WCCA for several years to distribute toys, clothing and other items to the families it serves through its Head Start, Early Head Start and N.C. Pre-K early childhood education programs. Monday, WCCA staff picked up 171 bags of toys and other goodies to begin sorting and delivering to families in need throughout Henderson, Transylvania, Rutherford and Polk counties.
