Iconic Main Street business set to mark its 85th anniversary this week

They are downtown Gardner’s version of Mount Rushmore – the four businesses that have been continuously opened in the city’s business district since the 1930s.
Lakin’s, which first opened in June of 1935, and the Paramount Cafe, opened in October of 1935, are among the oldest continuously opened establishments in their 86th year.
The Bowlaway is the youngest holdover from that decade, first opening in 1939.
Third in longevity, Priscilla Candy Shop at 4 Main St. marks its 85th birthday this Monday, first opening on Feb. 8, 1936.

One hundred years ago, they called them “the Roaring Twenties.”
They were days of Prohibition and gangsters, flappers dancing the Charleston, silent movies featuring Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, and song hits from Al Jolson and Eddie Cantor.
The town of Gardner was going through the paces to eventually become the city of Gardner in two more years.
Last week, we took a look back 50 years ago to the year 1971. This week, we will go back a full century as we look at many of the unique tidbits and highlights from the local scene for the year 1921.
