Australia: CFPE/IYSSE meeting calls for rank-and-file committees to fight education cuts
Academics, university staff and students, workers and youth took part in a lively online public meeting last Saturday to discuss the political issues posed by the historic government-management offensive against university jobs and conditions in Australia and internationally.
Many questions were raised and answered about the need for a network of rank-and-file committees to fight against the ruling elite’s exploitation of the COVID-19 pandemic to accelerate the pro-business restructuring and decimation of public education.

Western Sydney University has improved its position in this year’s influential ‘Times Higher Education Young University Rankings’, ranking 34
th in the world and 6
th in Australia.
The 2021 rankings assessed 475 universities from around the world under 50 years old, with the University building on its 2020 rank of 36
th and 2019 rank of 58
th.
Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Barney Glover AO said the result reflected the institution’s world-class research, teaching and engagement, and is testament to the sustained efforts of the University community, particularly during the challenges to the sector over the last 18 months.
