ALERT! Your Dog and the 4th of July

If you can, keep your dogs in a quiet and safe place around the 4 th of July and stay home with her or him. If you go out, keep your dog indoors where it cannot escape.  Keep your dog on leash when you go outside during a time when there are fireworks, even if you are going into your yard. You would be amazed to hear about feats of jumping from balconies, jumping over, or digging under fences, crashing through windows or doors, or escaping from a leash when there are fireworks.  If your dog does run away, contact your City Animal Shelter. Contact information for the shelter covering Tarzana is:  West Valley Animal Shelter, 888-452-7381 or 818-756-9466, 20655 Plummer Street, Chatsworth, CA 91331.

GM  Brenda Barnette s Decade at LA Animal Services –Transformation or Tyranny?

ANIMAL WATCH-The stern face of a Pit Bull adorns the Best Friends’ Animal Society’s Facebook  announcement, “Together, We Made LA a No-Kill City,” but there is no mention of Los Angeles Animal Services nor General Manager Brenda Barnette as part of this accomplishment. Was this an oversight?  Barnette is retiring as General Manager of LAAS after a decade of  brutal attacks by Pit Bulls and other dogs with known-aggressive behavior on innocent and unsuspecting victims adopters, visitors, and employees at Los Angeles City animal shelters. These are dogs Barnette has made available for adoption, often with knowledge of their backgrounds and with written comments/warnings by shelter staff.

New GM for LA Animal Services May Surprise You

New GM for LA Animal Services May Surprise You Details ANIMAL WATCH-Brenda Barnette has announced her retirement as General Manager of the LA Animal Services Department, effective in early May. Who will be the new GM?  The General Manager is appointed by the Mayor and must then be confirmed by the LA City Council.  Mayor Garcetti has named Dana Brown, who served as Assistant General Manager of the Animal Services Department from 2015 to 2018, as Interim General Manager until a permanent GM is selected.  A suggestion to Mayor Garcetti and the City Council: Animal Rescue Organizations, Animal Services Volunteers, Animal Activists, and Neighborhood Councils should have input into the choice of the permanent General Manager.

LA West Valley Animal Shelter to Reopen, but Pets and Strays Need Appointments

LA West Valley Animal Shelter to Reopen, but Pets and Strays Need Appointments Details ANIMAL WATCH-On February 18, 2021, Los Angeles Animal Services General Manager Brenda Barnette (photo above) submitted a brief two-page letter to Councilman Paul Koretz and the City Council, abruptly revising her recent reconstitution proposal, Long Term Plan for the West Valley Animal Shelter, and reinstating the shelter s original purpose of serving and protecting the lost, abandoned and unwanted dogs, cats and other animals in West Valley communities.  This was announced after months of GM Barnette s bully tactics to deprive the West Valley communities of a critical municipal animal shelter for which they pay taxes, and it would have left 40% (260 square miles) of the city of Los Angeles and over 1.77 million residents and their pets with only one animal shelter, the smaller East Valley Animal Shelter in Van Nuys.
