Kolkata mayor urges Centre to allow COVID-19 vaccination for general public to begin in West Bengal

Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) mayor Firhad Hakim has sent a letter to the central government requesting permission to start vaccination for the general public in West Bengal.
Talking to the media, Hakim said that although the initial vaccination doses are being given to frontline health workers, vaccination should start for common people of the state as well.
âSeveral health workers are not taking vaccination as they are afraid of the side effects. So I have written a letter to the Central Ministry to grant us permission to vaccinate the common people of West Bengal,â mentioned Hakim, adding that if the BJP-led central government affirms, camps will be set up at South Kolkata to give vaccines to people above 50 years of age.

New Delhi, Jan 17: As India began its nationwide vaccination drive against the novel coronavirus, 1,91,181 healthcare and frontline workers received the jab on Saturday, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi rolled out the world s biggest inoculation drive against the pandemic that has caused 1,52,093 deaths and upended millions of lives in the country.

The Health Ministry said that the massive inoculation exercise was done during 3,352 sessions conducted by 16,755 vaccinators, marking it as a historic and biggest coronavirus vaccination drive launched by PM Modi.

The West Bengal Health Department on Friday decided to set up a separate ward with 50 beds at Beleghata Infectious Disease Hospital in Kolkata for treatment of patients infected with the new strain of virus causing COVID-19. Two persons have been confirmed to be infected with the strain in Kolkata and samples of the third person have been sent for testing.
The State on Friday reported 1,153 new COVID-19 cases, taking the total number of infections to 5,53,216. As many as 26 deaths pushed the toll to 9,738. The active cases have dropped to 11,616 while the discharge rate has gone up to 96.14%.
