Dec. 14 The nation’s coronavirus death toll neared 300,000 Sunday, a tragic benchmark in a pandemic that is hurtling forward on an increasingly destructive path, with hospitals in California and the Bay Area recording a record number of coronavirus patients even as lifesaving vaccine shipments are expected to arrive from Pfizer-BioNTech on Monday.
Available intensive care unit capacity in the Southern California region dropped to 4.2% on Sunday, down from 5.3% a day earlier, and also dropped in the Bay Area from 17.6% on Saturday to 16.7% on Sunday. Available ICU capacity in the hard-hit San Joaquin Valley rose slightly, from 0 on Saturday to 1.5% on Sunday.

LOS ANGELES (CNS) More Los Angeles County hospitals started receiving shipments of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine Tuesday, one day after initial doses were administered at a Kaiser Permanente facility in Hollywood.
Vaccinations were due to arrive Tuesday and Wednesday at the rest of the nine sites in the county equipped with the ultra-cold-storage facilities needed for the Pfizer medication. The vaccines will then be farmed out to 83 acute-care hospitals countywide for administration to health care workers, who are at the top of the priority list to receive the initial doses.
