Police have launched a murder investigation after an 83-year-old woman plummeted 20ft to her death from a top-floor window to escape a suspected arson attack.
The victim screamed for dear life before jumping from the window after her home in Balsall Heath, Birmingham was allegedly torched before 9.30am yesterday. She was rushed to hospital but later died of her injuries.
A 52-year-old man, who was also inside the property, is being treated in hospital after suffering serious burns.
West Midlands Police have arrested a 46-year-old man on suspicion of murder.
Detective Inspector Wes Martin, of the force s homicide team, said: This is a really tragic case, where a woman has sadly died after her own home, a place that should be safe, was set on fire.

A man has admitted stabbing two paramedics at his Wolverhampton home. Martyn Smith attacked Deena Evans and Michael Hipgrave at his maisonette in Stephens Close, Ashmore Park, on July 6 last year. The 52-year-old, had previously denied two counts of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, but during a hearing at Wolverhampton Crown Court on Monday, April 19, he changed his pleas to guilty.

Police are hunting a knifeman who stabbed a man in the chest and leg in a targeted attack at a city park
The victim, aged in his 30s, was knifed multiple times as families and park-goers watched on at Handsworth Park shortly before 2pm today (April 19).
Emergency services, including an air ambulance and five police cars, swooped to the playing field and the man was treated for potentially serious injuries before being taken to hospital.
