Plan B review: Hulu s winningly raunchy teen girl comedy

kicked off the teen sex comedy craze of the 1980s, it did so with a subplot about a young woman getting an abortion. Yet even as that movie influenced decades of comedies about Brads and Spicolis, it’s only recently that a woman’s right to choose has finally reentered the teen comedy lexicon. The winning new high school buddy romp Plan B joins Unpregnant (and, on the more dramatic end, Never Rarely Sometimes Always) as a road trip movie about two loyal best friends facing the challenges of a sexist health care system. And though this particular trip hits a few creative speed bumps along the way, it’s buoyed by great comedic specificity and two (hopefully) star-making performances.

Starring Kuhoo Verma, Victoria Moroles, Michael Provost, Myha’la Herrold, Jolly Abraham, Mason Cook, Timothy Granderos, Moses Storm, Edi Patterson, Jacob Vargas, Gus Birney, Hana Hayes, Bobby Tisdale, Josh Ruben, Alexander Low, and Jay Chandrasekhar. SYNOPSIS: Follows a straight-laced high school student and her slacker best friend who, after a regrettable first sexual encounter, have 24 hours to hunt down a Plan B pill in America’s heartland. As I watched Plan B, I couldn’t help but think of last year’s Unpregnant for two reasons: both comedies share a similar road trip narrative centered on teenage friendship and pro-choice pregnancy, and I mistakenly thought Hulu had also released that movie on their streaming service and that they were cornering the market regarding timely comedies on women’s rights, specifically with their bodies.
