The CWUR grades universities on four factors without relying on surveys and university data submissions: quality of education (25%), alumni employment (25%), quality of faculty (10%), and research performance (40%).
This year, 19,788 institutions were ranked, and those that placed at the top made the global 2,000 list.

Thirteen universities from South Africa feature in the 2021-2022 list of the top 2,000 universities (CWUR). Statistically 13 of our Universities are in the top 10% globally and 7 in the top 5%. They are led by the University of Cape Town, ranked 269th globally, and followed by the University of the Witwatersrand at 292nd. Stellenbosch University (SU) is maintaining its steady performance on the global university rankings and consolidating its place among the world s best tertiary institutions. Having appeared on three major university rankings in 2020, it now also features on the 2021/22 list of top 2 000 universities compiled by the
(CWUR). This latest achievement puts SU among the top 1,4% of universities globally.
This year, CWUR ranked 19 788 institutions, and those that came out on top made the global 2 000 list. SU is ranked at number 435 – only slightly lower than last year – and is one of 13 South African universities on the list.

The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) has been announced as one of the top 2.5% universities out of 19 788 worldwide, as the Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR) released its 2021-22 Global 2000 List.
Nationally and regionally (South Africa and Africa respectively), this puts UKZN in fourth place.
The Centre for World University Rankings - which publishes the largest academic rankings of global universities - is a leading consulting organisation providing policy advice, strategic insights and consulting services to governments and universities to improve educational and research outcomes.
CWUR publishes authoritative global university rankings, known for objectivity, transparency and consistency, which are trusted by students, academics, university administrators and governments from around the world.
Ranking the 13 best universities in South Africa

They are led by the University of Cape Town, ranked 269th globally, and followed by the University of the Witwatersrand at 292nd.
Stellenbosch University, University of KwaZulu-Natal, and the University of Pretoria round up the top five universities in South Africa, with the University of Johannesburg ranked sixth.
The only change in the local university rankings for 2021/22 is the University of the Free State overtaking the University of the Western Cape to be ranked eighth – having been ranked ninth last year.
