CALS represents Open Secrets and the Unpaid Benefits Campaign in a challenge to the secretive process for making appointments to the FSCA
Open Secrets and the Unpaid Benefits Campaign (UBC), represented by the Centre for Applied Legal Studies (CALS), have approached the Gauteng High Court to set aside portions of the regulations that were made in terms of the Financial Sector Regulation, relating to the appointment process of the Commissioner and Deputy Commissioners of the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA).
This forms part of ongoing efforts by both organisations to ensure that the FSCA and other key public institutions intended to regulate powerful private sector corporations act in a manner that serves broad the public interest. Leadership appointments are key to achieving this.

Cape Town - The City and the attorneys for the more than 900 people occupying the Cissie Gool House (Woodstock Hospital) have reached an agreement, backed by an order of the Western Cape High Court, to conduct a survey to determine the identity and the number of occupiers.
The agreement came after occupiers, who come under the Reclaim the City banner, won their challenge against having the City conduct the survey and the court ordered that the survey must instead be conducted by the Centre for Applied Legal Studies (CALS), who are the attorneys for the occupiers.

Cape Town - People occupying the old Woodstock Hospital have accused the City of resorting to bullying and intimidation while a court case is pending, after law enforcement officers and police stormed the property with cameras on Monday.
In a video taken by the occupants, the law enforcement officers are seen being chased away by the residents while screaming, “They want to intimidate us. This is our home, we are going nowhere.”
This occurred while the occupants, represented by the Centre for Applied Legal Studies (CALS), are expected to respond to the City’s application for a court-ordered survey of the almost 1 000 occupants after the Western Cape High Court granted them an opportunity to respond.
