Women leaders and activists have called on Nigerian women to work together and develop a platform to attain political and socio-economic power.
A statement on Tuesday said the call was made by the wife of the Ekiti State Governor, Bisi Fayemi, Chairperson of Gender and Constitution Reform Network, Prof. Joy Ezeilo and others at the Womanifesto Conference 2020 edition, in Abuja.
Ezeilo, who was also the chairperson of the conference, encouraged women to speak out against gender-based violence and get involved in the socio-political environment.
Fayemi stated that a new culture orientation was required to groom the next generation of men who would see women as counterparts rather than a weaker sex.

TOMORROW is the last day of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence campaign coordinated by the Centre for Women’s Global Leadership. It is also International Human Rights Day.
Over the past few weeks, organisations and advocates have been starting and sustaining conversations about gender-based violence, women’s rights, and human rights. These awareness-raising events are important, but they come and go, only having lasting impact when our work continues.
Almost every time there is a conversation about women’s rights, someone says, “What about the men?” When we talk about violence against women, it is almost guaranteed that someone will say, “Men experience violence too.”

Violence against women is rampant not only in Pakistan but around the world in various forms, be it domestic violence and abuse, sexual abuse and harassment, forced marriage, child marriage, human trafficking, cyber-bullying, acid attacks, female genital mutilation, etc. In fact, women face physical, psychological, and sexual violence in every sphere of life, whether they are at the workplace or on the street or in the market.
The ‘In-Depth Study on All Forms of Violence against Women: Report of the Secretary-General, 2006’, mandated by General Assembly resolution 58/185, states that “Violence against women is one of the most pervasive human rights violations. It devastates lives, fractures communities, and stalls development. At least one out of every three women around the world has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime – with the abuser usually someone known to her.”
