Influx of more private vehicles a matter of concern, says councillor
Faced with additional influx of vehicles into the NH Bypass since Saturday, which created unprecedented snarls at Vyttila, demand is rife that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which owns the Edappally-Aroor NH Bypass, or the PWD, which built the Vyttila flyover, urgently take up the second phase development of the congested junction.
Saturday’s chaos is a symptom of what is in store, since more private vehicles are expected to converge at the junction.
Narrow slip road
The NHAI or the PWD must initiate steps to widen the narrow slip road on the eastern side (Thripunithura side) of the flyover, if need be, by acquiring land, to carve out space for vehicles from Palarivattom wanting to turn left towards the Vyttila Mobility Hub or Thripunithura and those waiting for signal to turn right towards SA Road, said Sunitha Dixon, councillor representing the Kochi Corporation’s Vyttila Division.

Police personnel stand guard at the Kundannoor flyover which is scheduled for inauguration on Saturday | A Sanesh By Express News Service
KOCHI: Even as Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is scheduled to inaugurate Vyttila and Kundannoor flyovers on Saturday, a debate is raging whether the opening of the flyovers should have been delayed for more than a week since the load testing, blocking the traffic on the busy stretch every day for several hours.
The heated debate, coming in the wake of the arrests of the activists of V4Kerala, a recently-launched apolitical outfit, questions the need for a formal opening of the key flyovers when the chief minister could very well do it from Thiruvananthapuram through an online event, especially in Covid times.

KOCHI: The Left Democratic Front (LDF) could perhaps taste its sweetest victory in this year’s local body polls by returning to power in Kochi corporation after a gap of ten years.
As things stand, the LDF has won 34 seats in the 74-member council while the United Democratic Front’s (UDF) tally has come down to 31 from the 37 it claimed in 2015.
The BJP, meanwhile, made inroads by winning five seats, up from just one last time.
