(Facebook, Weng Chang-Liang photo) TAIPEI (Taiwan News) On Wednesday (Feb. 3), the Ministry of Education (MOE) announced that the reopening of K-12 schools after their winter holiday will be postponed to Feb. 22. During a press conference held by the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) on Wednesday, Education Minister Pan Wen-chung (潘文忠) said that due to the severity of the global pandemic, and in order to ensure the health and safety of campuses, winter vacation for high schools and elementary schools will be extended by four days to Feb. 22. Pan said that the additional time will enable schools to complete epidemic prevention preparations, as well as cleaning and disinfecting.

Two new imported COVID-19 cases recorded in Taiwan

CNA file photo Taipei, Feb. 3 (CNA) Taiwan on Wednesday reported two new imported cases of COVID-19, both of which are Indonesian nationals employed as fishermen, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC). The two men, both in their 20s, came to Taiwan on the same flight on Jan. 16 with proof of negative COVID-19 test results issued within three days of their flight as required, and went into 14-day mandatory quarantine at a hotel upon arrival, the center said in a press release. After they completed their quarantine Monday, they were arranged to be tested again by their labor brokers and the results came back positive, the CECC said, adding that both of them have been asymptomatic so far.

Death at Taoyuan hospital still a mystery after negative COVID-19

CNA file photo Taipei, Feb. 3 (CNA) A patient who was hospitalized at Taoyuan General Hospital last month and died on Jan. 29 has tested negative for COVID-19, but the cause of death has yet to be determined, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) said Wednesday. The mystery over the patient s death has drawn attention because of questions raised by the deceased s family over the situation, especially given that Taoyuan General Hospital was the site of a COVID-19 cluster infection that began on Jan. 12. The CECC has not said why the patient, said to be in his or her 60s, was hospitalized to begin with.

Wu of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) filed the complaint of aggravated defamation at the Taipei District Prosecutors’ Office after his office gathered evidence on 10 people whose posts mentioning Wu were widely circulated on social media. The reposts reportedly sparked controversy among Internet users on leading online discussion sites, including Professional Technology Temple and Dcard.
