(CNA photo) TAIPEI (Taiwan News) Taiwan s Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) on Monday (Jan. 18) announced four new domestic cases and two imported cases of Wuhan coronavirus, with all new local cases tied to the hospital cluster. On Tuesday (Jan. 19), CECC head Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) announced four new domestic coronavirus cases and two imported infections, bringing the total to 868. The latest domestic cases are comprised of a fourth nurse from the same hospital, relatives of two prior cases, and a foreign caregiver, while the newest imported cases include a Taiwanese woman and an Indonesian fisheries worker.

Taipei, Jan. 19 (CNA) Major hospitals in Taoyuan and Taipei have tightened their restrictions on visits to inpatients following a rising COVID-19 outbreak in a cluster of domestic infections that began with a doctor who contracted the virus while treating a coronavirus patient at Taoyuan General Hospital.
Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital said Tuesday that those wishing to visit inpatients must first telephone a nursing station or use the hospital s online service application one day ahead of time to make an appointment.
No appointment will be accepted on the actual day of a visit, said the hospital, which is some 24 kilometers from the location of the latest cluster outbreak, which had affected nine people as of Tuesday.
Taiwan called off its largest Lunar New Year lantern festival for the first time on Tuesday, as authorities rushed to stem a Covid-19 cluster in one of the few places to survive the pandemic largely unscathed. The Taiwan Lantern Festival is held in different locations each year, and was set to take place in the northern city of Hsinchu next month. But the three-decade-old event, which typically sees up to a million visitors, was cancelled after.

Taipei, Jan. 19 (CNA) Shares in Taiwan surged more than 260 points to close above the 15,800-point mark Tuesday, led by contract chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), dealers said.
Non-tech stocks largely fluctuated within a narrow range as buying focused on the electronics sector, but companies making products related to disease prevention drew interest amid recent reports in Taiwan of domestically transmitted COVID-19 cases, they said.
The weighted index on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE), the Taiex, ended up 265.37 points, or 1.70 percent, at 15,877.37, after moving between 15,716.64 and 15,928.14, on turnover of NT$316.86 billion (US$11.3 billion).
