China’s top foreign policy advisor has warned the United States not to interfere in Hong Kong and Xinjiang’s affairs after the Biden administration condemned Beijing’s policies in the two regions.
Yang Jiechi, director of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission of the Chinese Communist Party, is the highest-ranking Chinese leader to speak on China-US relations since US President Joe Biden took office last month.
Yang’s comments on Tuesday followed criticism from senior Biden administration officials against China’s repression of Muslim minorities and its clampdown on Hong Kong.
Under the Trump administration, US relations with China plunged to their lowest point since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1979, as both sides clashed over issues ranging from trade and technology to Hong Kong, Taiwan and Xinjiang, and the South China Sea.

WASHINGTON, Feb 2 (Reuters) - U.S. State Department spokesman Ned Price said on Tuesday that Beijing should to cease military, diplomatic, economic pressure against Taiwan, after China’s top diplomat called for improvements in U.S.-China relations.
Yang Jiechi, director of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission of the Chinese Communist Party, said earlier in the day that the United States should stop meddling on “issues regarding China’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.”
Asked about the comments at a press briefing, Price said engagement with China could be expected when the United States was in lock step with allies and partners.

Liu Cigui is perhaps the first high-profile casualty in China’s 2022 Party Congress race. He was effectively eliminated in December 2020 along with other Politburo potential Bayanqolu. Liu was promoted out of contention, being taken out of the Hainan party secretary position and “elevated” to central level as the vice chair of the National People’s Congress Foreign Affairs Committee. Sitting on this committee alone could have been an indication of Liu’s future role in China’s foreign policymaking and party power system. But this promotion out of the provincial party seat to a central position without a path to Politburo signals the end of his political career. His foreign policymaking career may live on though through the 2022-2027 political administration.

China s Foreign Minister Wang Yi is scheduled to arrive in Myanmar on Monday on a critical two-day visit. It is intended to further strengthen Chinese influence in the country, in light of the changing international dynamics in the region, amid fears that China s sway is beginning to wane.
Beijing is increasingly concerned with a plethora of issues, including recent Indian and Japanese initiatives with Myanmar, which Beijing fears may prove to be to their detriment, but also to take stock of the continued economic cooperation, strengthen its support for the peace process and to boost China s support for Myanmar s battle to control the Covid pandemic.
