York Region Public Health confirm over 50 COVID-19 cases linked to FedEx facility in Vaughan

York Region Public Health has issued a public notice confirming an outbreak at a FedEx facility in Vaughan resulted in over 50 cases of COVID-19.
The public health unit says 54 cases have been linked to a FedEx Ground located at 45 Di Poce Way.
“A workplace outbreak was declared after information was received indicating approximately 15 workers were suspected cases of COVID-19. Public Health staff have been in regular communication with the company,” said York Region Public Health.
Of the 54 cases, 29 people are from Peel Region, 13 cases are from Toronto, 10 cases are from York Region, with 2 cases confirmed out of Wellington-Dufferin Guelph.
TORONTO A York Region police officer has died after she was involved in a snowmobiling crash while off duty earlier this month. “With profound sadness I share the passing of one of our members,” Chief Jim MacSween said in a tweet Tuesday evening. “Det. Const. Meghan Crook was critically injured in a snowmobile accident on Jan. 2 and tragically lost her battle today.” Her friends, colleagues and family are in our thoughts. The circumstances surrounding the snowmobile crash have not been made public. Crook had been with the police force since 2014, according to MacSween. The York Regional Police Association said in a tweet Tuesday night that Crook will be remembered as always having a smile on her face and her dedication to helping those in need.
Last Updated Thursday, January 28, 2021 9:58AM EST The City of Vaughan is reopening a number of outdoor amenities, including all of its outdoor ice rinks, after rising COVID-19 case growth in York Region prompted officials to close the facilities earlier this month. In a news release, the city said staff have already reopened the toboggan hill at North Maple Regional Park and the dog park at Racco Parkway and on Feb. 1, all five outdoor skating rinks will reopen. “These amenities closed temporarily effective Friday, Jan. 15 in response to rising cases of the virus and people crowding in these spaces while not following public health guidelines around physical distancing and mask usage,” the news release read.

During a news conference at a Vaughan hospital, Ontario Premier Doug Ford makes an announcement and provides an update on his government’s response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. He is joined by provincial ministers Christine Elliott (Health) and Stephen Lecce (Education), as well as by the mayor of Vaughan, Maurizio Bevilacqua, and the president and CEO of Mackenzie Health, Altaf Stationwala. The premier announces a $125 million dollar investment to add over 500 critical care beds to hospitals in areas most severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. A portion of this funding will be dedicated to the temporary transition of Cortelluci Hospital into a resource supporting the province’s COVID-19 response.
