The problems behind the apparent malfunctions of the Pa

The Pan-African Parliament (Pap) has seen no small amount of disgraceful misbehaviour among some of its members over the past several days. Much of it has provoked schadenfreude, and mischievous giggles, with the customary Afro-pessimism. The main line is the old canard that “Africans can’t govern themselves”. The apparent malfunctions of the Pap are caused by several problems; ideational, cultural, power, size, sequencing and policy. The latter two belong together.  The ideational – the founding concepts – of the Pap is problematic. For what may seem politically the right idea, Pan-Africanism is based at the outset on race. It was based on the idea that “black,” “coloured” and “native” African people – from the Tuareg and Berbers, to the Xhosa and Khoisan, necessarily shared some kind of harmony of interests. Thailand sees 14% rise of durian export to China in Q1; reports 1,763 new Covid-19 cases, 27 more deaths

BANGKOK, May 4 (Xinhua): Thailand has exported US$186 million worth of durian to China during this year s first quarter, said a senior government official on Tuesday. According to Trade Negotiations Department Director General Oramon Sapthaweetham, the sales of Thai durian to China from January to March this year secured US$186 million, registering a 14 per cent increase from the same period last year and accounting for 88 per cent of a total of Thai durian export values to the world markets. Thailand exported US$1.5 billion worth of durian to China throughout last year, marking a 78 per cent increase from 2019 and accounting for 73 per cent of a total of Thai durian export values to the world markets, Oramon said.

Chinese premier hold talks with new Lao PM on bilateral ties; set to boost cooperation between two countries

BEIJING, April 24 (Xinhua): Chinese Premier Li Keqiang has held a phone conversation with Laos new Prime Minister Phankham Viphavanh. Li said that China and Laos are longtime friendly neighbors linked by mountains and rivers, with the friendship between both peoples growing with time, noting that China has always regarded China-Laos relations as a priority in its neighboring diplomacy.
