I suppose I am like a lot of other people who never knew, until President Joe Biden’s inauguration, that America had a national youth poet laureate or that we needed one. But we did, and we do.
Actually, we have had four such young poets laureate since the title was first awarded in 2017. The honor goes to a teenager who “demonstrates not only extraordinary literary talent but also a proven record of community engagement and youth leadership,” according to Poets & Writers magazine. The current honoree is Meera Dasgupta, a student at New York City’s Stuyvesant High School, dually enrolled at Hunter College. Dasgupta’s LinkedIn profile outshines those of most people three times her age. But the accomplished teen still has a hard act to follow in Amanda Gorman, the inaugural holder of the title whose presidential inaugural performance opened my culturally clueless eyes.

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS - While you may not necessarily know her name yet, by now you have most probably seen a video clip or photograph of the young woman in yellow who performed at US President Joe Biden’s inauguration.
But who exactly is the woman in the yellow coat?
Amanda Gorman is a 22-year-old poet who delivered her work,
The Hill We Climb, to the socially distanced audience in Washington DC and everyone else watching from home all over the world.
Gorman was recommended by US’s new First Lady, Jill Biden.
It was this same invitation that inspired her outfit for the day.

Young, brilliant, and talented, Amanda Gorman is taking the world by storm. The 22-year-old poet, writer, and activist was born with special needs, but Gorman didn’t let that stop her from setting massive goals and obtaining them.
She is already a published author with a book entitled,
The One for Whom Food Is Not Enough, inspired by her favorite line from Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun and was Los Angeles’ first-ever Youth Poet Laureate.
Coming from a very strong family with an incredible support system, Gorman’s mother championed her creativity, encouraging her to take risks. “I was showing my mom some of my work that I had been doing where I had been painting and doing visual art over my poetry and she was like, ‘This is something. You should keep on this path,’ and I’m very grateful that I have that type of supportive mom.”
